What are the different types of Shock?

Mostly, there are four different types of shock. It is hypo volemic, cardiogenic, obstructive and distributive shock. In some cases there is a combination of all different shocks.

In case of hypo volemic shock there is a decrease in the circulating volume. It is the most common type of shock. It occurs due to the loss of fluid. It occurs from the circulation as a result of large bleeding and a large area of burns.

In case of cardiogenic shock there is an inability of the heart to pump properly. It occurs as a result of injury to heart muscle from a disorder of heart. There are other heart problems which can lead to this type of shock.

In case of obstructive shock there is a slow or less movement of the blood to heart. It can occur due to number of reasons. It can occur due to increase in the pressure of thorax and the flow of blood to heart is stopped and is referred as the tension pneumo thorax. There may be formation of emboli in the lungs which may interfere with the flow of blood to the heart. It is referred as the pulmonary embolism. There may be presence of fluid in the outer covering of heart which does not allow the blood to flow into heart. In some cases the outer covering of heart may shrink and get hard. It is referred as the cardiac temponade. There may be obstruction in the flow of blood by a disorder of aorta known as aortic stenosis.

There is another type of shock which is known as endocrine shock. It occurs due to the problems in endocrine system. In the case of hypo thyroidism there is a cardiogenic shock in which there is an inability of the heart to pump properly. It occurs as a result of injury to heart muscle from a disorder of heart. It occurs in the ill patient and decreases the blood flow to heart. It can lead to hypo tension and affect the respiratory system.

In case of thyrotoxicosis there is a cardiogenic shock in which there is an inability of the heart to pump properly. It occurs as a result of injury to heart muscle from a disorder of heart. It may lead to disorder in the heart.

In case of acute adrenal insufficiency there is a distributive shock in which there is a decrease in the volume of blood. It occurs due to the loss of elasticity of blood vessels which affect the vascular resistance. It occurs as a result of sudden with drawl of steroids without decreasing its dose. The surgery of the patients on steroids may lead to this disorder.

In case of relative adrenal insufficiency there is a distributive shock in which there is a decrease in the volume of blood. It occurs due to the loss of elasticity of blood vessels which affect the vascular resistance. It occurs in the ill patient and decreases the blood flow to heart.

In case of distributive shock there is a decrease in the volume of blood. It occurs due to the loss of elasticity of blood vessels which affect the vascular resistance. It includes the septic shock, anaphylactic and neurogenic shock.

In case of septic shock there is an infection in the body which leads to hypo tension. In this the blood vessels are dilated. It can also occur as a result of bacteria which are gram negative in nature. They release the endo toxins which affect the different parts of cell in an adverse manner. It can also occur due to some gram positive species of bacteria.

In case of anaphylactic shock there is a severe response to allergen. It can also occur to a foreign body or to a drug. In this there is a release of histamine which leads to dilation of blood vessels. It leads to hypotension.

In case of neurogenic shock there is an injury to the spinal cord. This is a very rare condition. There are no reflexes. The walls of vessels relax which decreases the resistance offered by blood vessels. The spinal shock is different from this type of shock. It can be recovered after an injury to spinal cord.
