What is an Acute myeloblastic leukemia type 5 ?
It is defined as a disorder in which there is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. In this, there is a very fast growth of the abnormal white blood cells which get accumulated in the bone marrow. It is also known as the AML. It refers to acute myelogenous leukemia. These abnormal white cells cause interference with the production of normal blood cells.
It is the most acute form of leukemia. It affects adults and with increasing age its chances also increase. The AML is a rare disease which accounts for 1.2 percent of the deaths caused by cancer. The symptoms of the disease are caused due to the replacement of bone marrow with the leukemic cells which decreases the platelets, the red blood cells and normal white blood cells. It leads to fatigue, weakness, shortness of the breath and the person suffering from this disease is prone to easy bruising and bleeding and very high chances of infection. There are many risk factors which can increase the AML but the exact cause is still not clear. It increases rapidly and it may lead to the death of the individual within few months or weeks if not treated properly.
It has different sub types and in which the treatments are different. Their prognosis varies and the 5 year survival rate lies within the range of 15% to 70%. The relapse rate varies from 33 to 78 percent. In initial stage, it is treated with the chemotherapy which induces a remission. The patient may also receive an additional chemotherapy which is also known as the hematopoietic stem cell transplant. There are many researches which have shown that the genetics of Acute myeloblastic leukemia has developed tests that tell how long a patient could survive and to determine whether the drug is effective or not.
